Jo Witherington was born in rural Cambridgeshire, eventually moving to the Lakes in 2012.  She did not go to art school, but there is a strong artistic tradition in the family with Jo being related to a number of well known including William F Witherington, who has paint moings held in the Tate; and Henry William Pickersgill, the celebrated portrait painter who exhibited alongside J M W Turner and John Constable.  She is the National Trust’s official art supplier in the Lake District.

Stoney Broke Designs was started by Jo in 2014, when she was, literally that - stoney broke.  Working long hours on low wages after years overseas; she decided that there must be a more fulfilling way to make ends meet than cleaning toilets and pulling pints.  It was a dismal winter’s day in the Lake District when Jo finally decided to do something about her situation.  A trip to the local art supplier later, and ‘Stoney’ began in a junk-free corner of her tiny staff flat.  A few years on, and art has become her business, as well as a way of life.

Jo is a freelance artist and designer who works with UK manufacturers to produce unique and eye-catching gift ware. This has included products from signage to ceramics; keyrings to large pieces of fine art.  Everything available online and for wholesale is printed in the UK on papers that are either FSC compliant, recycled or made from sustainably managed sources. Packaging is either recyclable or made from recycled materials.  We are GS1 members. Our products are popular - to date, over 100 000 of Jo's images have been sold in different forms, shipping as far as Australia and the USA.  

Fine art commissions are sometimes undertaken and start at £1500 for smaller bespoke pieces.   We generally work six months in advance and availability is limited due to capacity!
